The Sermon on the Mount begins with a series of nine blessings that we know as the “Beatitudes.” What we often fail to realize about these blessings is that they are directed at an odd group of people—not the ones we naturally consider to be “blessed.” Jesus blesses the unlikely in order to prepare us for a sermon full of the unexpected.
