Jesus encounters a man who wishes to know how to gain eternal life, but he does not like Jesus' answer. And the disciples don't much like what Jesus has to say to them next: wealth and the kingdom of God do not mix easily. It all comes down to the gospel in a nutshell: "Many who are first will be last, and the last will be first."

The raising of Lazarus from the dead says a great deal about the resurrection, but not in the way we usually think. Lazarus was raised from the dead only to have to die again someday. Jesus does not only offer life in eternity; he also offers life today, in the here-and-now.

Jesus predicts the destruction of the temple—a prediction which comes to pass within a generation. But Jesus is saying something much more important in envisioning a future destruction. Jesus is challenging us to think critically about the present, recognizing that the things we build are of temporary significance, even the church.
