Thus Says the Lord

September 7 - October 5, 2014

They're called "the minor prophets" because they didn't write lengthy tomes like the likes of Isaiah, Jeremiah, or Ezekiel, but that does not make them insignificant. The so-called minor prophets were called by God to deliver critical messages to God's people at important times in their collective life, and their words resonate even today for the church in the twenty-first century.

Thus Says the Lord (Part 1)

The prophet Micah proclaims God's judgment upon Judah in the midst of the most significant religious revival since David himself was king.  The people of Judah were pleased with themselves for making religious reforms and had deluded themselves into thinking that all was well, when, in fact, it was not.

Thus Says the Lord (Part 2)

The prophet Amos delivers God's unrelenting judgment upon the people of Israel because they have neglected to maintain justice for the needy.  Israel assumed that "The Day of the Lord" would be the day of their victory and vindication among the nations, but it turns out that it will be a day of judgment.  We will all one day have to answer for our actions.

Thus Says the Lord (Part 3)

Far from the unrelenting judgment of a prophet like Amos, Hosea's message focuses on God's love in a way that no other biblical book does.  Hosea's own personal life becomes a vehicle for sharing the very heart of God with the people of Israel, and with us.

Thus Says the Lord (Part 4)

Unlike other prophets, Habakkuk does not simply deliver the message that God gives him; instead, he calls it into question, even rebuking God.  Then he prepares himself to hear how God will respond.  There is much to learn from this prophet about our own relationship with God.

Thus Says the Lord (Part 5)

Malachi is the last of the twelve Minor Prophets and the very last book of the Old Testament.  His is the last word before the New Testament because of some very clear words about a coming messenger, who Christians believe to be John the Baptist.  There is a very important difference between prophecy and predicition, and Malachi helps us get to the bottom of it.
